La Palma Wineries: Teneguía, Malvasía and What to Book

Updated October 25, 2026 · 5 min read

A winery guide draws wine from a wooden barrel in the cellar while a group of visitors watches

For a first winery visit on La Palma, Bodegas Teneguía is the easiest option to understand and book. Its guided visit lasts about one hour, starts at €15 and has 102 reviews. A half-past-noon start and a tasting are listed for the visit, but do not assume it runs on every day; confirm the weekdays, time and language before travelling.

Why the wine tastes of the island

La Palma’s vineyards grow across volcanic terrain, often in small plots shaped by slope, wind and ash. The island tourism authority highlights native grapes such as Malvasía and Listán Negro. Malvasía is especially associated with Fuencaliente in the south, but it is not the name for every local wine and it is not always dry. Ask what is in the glass instead of ordering by a broad label.

Traditional tea barrels, made from Canary pine heartwood, are another part of the island’s wine story. Not every producer or wine uses them. Teneguía’s visitor experience is valuable because it explains the cooperative and its growers rather than implying that one cellar represents the whole island.

What the Teneguía visit includes

The published experience includes entry, a guided tour and wine tasting. At one hour, it fits easily around Fuencaliente or the southern volcano landscape. Whether children can join and what non-drinkers receive should be confirmed on the booking page.

Driving and tasting

Fuencaliente’s wineries and vineyards are easier to combine by car than by an improvised sequence of buses. The obvious drawback is alcohol: the driver should not treat a tasting as a licence to sample every pour. If nobody wants to abstain, use a taxi or a guided excursion and confirm transport before booking.

If one person will drive, compare La Palma hire cars only after checking the route and parking. The affiliate link does not answer insurance, deposit or excess questions; verify those terms with the provider.

Our recommendation

Book the €15 Teneguía tour when you want a concise introduction with a published format. Visit smaller wineries only after contacting them directly, as opening and tastings may depend on arrangements. Pair wine with Fuencaliente rather than rushing between distant cellars, and browse other wine experiences on La Palma if transport matters more than choosing one producer.
