Los Tilos or Cubo de la Galga: Which Laurel-Forest Walk?
Updated October 25, 2026 · 5 min read
Choose Cubo de la Galga for an accessible first walk in La Palma’s laurel forest; choose Los Tilos only after deciding which route you actually mean. The official Cubo route is listed as a low-difficulty, circular five-kilometre walk taking about two hours. Los Tilos is an area and visitor centre connected to several walks, including much harder routes whose status can change.
Cubo de la Galga
The short route starts near the environmental information point in Puntallana and enters an increasingly dense, damp forest of laurel, heath and large ferns. The official description gives five kilometres, two hours and low difficulty. It also describes a longer extension via the San Bartolomé viewpoint towards Puntallana or San Andrés y Sauces, so do not confuse the easy circuit with every line visible on a map.
A guided Cubo de la Galga trek lasts four to five hours, starts at €32 and has 110 reviews. The additional time buys interpretation and a longer format, not merely access to a forest that is otherwise closed.
Los Tilos is not one trail
Los Tilos near San Andrés y Sauces has a free visitor centre, an accessible toilet and a self-guided path. Beyond it, routes towards Espigón Atravesado or Marcos y Cordero become different undertakings. The full PR LP 06 is listed at 24.5 kilometres and is unsuitable as an improvised extension to a visitor-centre stop.
Trail status is decisive here. The island network can close paths for rain or maintenance while nearby routes remain open. Check the official trail-status page on the morning of your walk; never copy a closure stated in an old article as if it were permanent.
| Plan | Published scale | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Cubo de la Galga short circuit | 5 km, about 2 hours, low difficulty | First laurel-forest walk |
| Guided Cubo trek | 4–5 hours, from €32 | Interpretation and longer outing |
| Los Tilos visitor area | Short, flexible visit | Forest introduction without a major hike |
| PR LP 06 | 24.5 km | Experienced hikers with current confirmation |
Conditions and transport
Moisture is the point of this forest and also what makes stones and roots slippery. Wear footwear with grip and carry water plus a light waterproof layer. Low difficulty does not mean step-free; anyone with restricted mobility should confirm the exact surface and current access.
Public transport is listed for Cubo de la Galga, whereas the official PR LP 06 information says there is no public transport to that trail. A hire car helps with separate forest stops, but it does not solve a point-to-point hike. If driving is genuinely part of the plan, compare La Palma hire cars.
Our recommendation
For most first visits, walk the short Cubo circuit and keep the day simple. Book the €32 guided trek if learning about the forest matters or you prefer a longer organised route. Treat Los Tilos as a separate decision made from the live trail status, not as a synonym for an easy waterfall walk. Compare more guided hikes on La Palma.
