Snorkelling in Los Cancajos: Guided Trip or Go on Your Own?
Updated October 25, 2026 · 5 min read
Los Cancajos is the simplest place on La Palma to try snorkelling without turning it into a full-day excursion. The semi-urban beach has volcanic-rock breakwaters, shore access, showers, toilets, parking and bus connections. A guided Atlantic snorkelling trip with equipment lasts two hours, starts at €35 and has 96 reviews. Going independently costs less, but the guided format is more useful if you need equipment or do not yet know how to read an Atlantic entry point.
Why Los Cancajos works
The official island tourism site describes a 624-metre black-sand beach protected by volcanic rock. The coves reduce some of the direct ocean energy, and lava formations create varied underwater terrain. This does not mean flat water every day. Swell, wind and visibility still change, so judge the sea you actually find rather than relying on a photograph.
Access is the other advantage. You can arrive by bus or car, use beach facilities and stop without being committed to a boat timetable. That makes Los Cancajos particularly practical for a short first session or a mixed group in which not everyone wants to snorkel.
Guided or independent?
The two-hour guided trip includes full equipment rental and starts at €35. It is the sensible choice for a beginner who wants help with fit, entry and where to look. Confirm the precise meeting point, whether a wetsuit is included and the operator’s minimum age on the booking page; those details can vary.
Independent snorkelling suits confident swimmers carrying suitable gear. Stay in the protected area, keep clear of boat passages and never enter caves or tunnels simply because divers use them. The official dive description mentions deeper features, including a submerged aircraft wing at 30 metres; those are scuba-diving references, not targets for a casual snorkeller.
| Choice | Time | From | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Guided Atlantic snorkelling trip | 2 hours | €35 | Beginners and travellers without gear |
| Independent beach session | Flexible | No tour price | Confident swimmers with equipment |
Conditions and wildlife
Expect rocky volcanic scenery and small Atlantic fish, not a guaranteed checklist of species. Do not touch, feed or chase animals, and leave stones where they are. If visibility is poor or waves are breaking across the entry, postpone the swim. Lifeguard presence and beach flags are current-day information, so follow what is displayed on site.
Use sun protection that will not wash off immediately, and ask a pharmacist or doctor if you need personal medical advice. A rash vest or wetsuit can help with temperature and sun, but check what the operator supplies before buying or packing extra equipment.
Getting there
Los Cancajos lies on the east coast between the airport and Santa Cruz de La Palma. It is about two kilometres from the airport and roughly seven from Santa Cruz, and bus connections make a car unnecessary for this one outing. A hire car becomes useful only if you combine the beach with less accessible stops elsewhere; if so, compare La Palma hire cars after deciding how many days you actually need one.
Our recommendation
Choose the €35 guided trip for a first Atlantic snorkel or when you need equipment. Go independently when you already have the skills and can walk away if conditions are unsuitable. For more sea-based options, compare the boat and marine experiences on La Palma.
